Rameswaram Jyotirlinga – An Actual Representation 0f Lord Shiva

Rameswaram Jyotirlinga Temple is a famous pilgrimage centre that is the abode of Lord Ramanathaswamy in the form of a Linga, which is said to have been installed and worshipped by Lord Rama. And hence the name Ramanathaswamy whose consort is Goddess Parvathavardini. Lord Hanuman was sent to the Himalayas to bring the linga, but when there was a delay, Mother Sita made a Linga out of sand called the Ramalingam. This is the Linga that’s seen in the main sanctum.

Situated on Rameshwaram island in Tamil Nadu, the Rameswaram Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India. As per Lord Rama’s instructions, Lord Hanuman’s Vishwalingam is worshipped first even today. It’s the most sacred of all and is believed to be the actual representation of Lord Shiva.

There are 64 Theerthams or holy water bodies in and around Rameswaram and having a ceremonial bath in them is considered equivalent to observing a penance. It’s believed that devotees who visit this temple shall find a place in Shivaloka. Pilgrims who visit Kashi must visit this temple to complete their pilgrimage.

Worship of Lord Ramanathaswamy removes all planetary dosha in the horoscope. Malefic effects of Rahu and Ketu are eliminated by performing pooja here. He blesses devotees and removes sins, diseases and other disorders. A person can find relief from the cycle of birth and death.

Rameswaram Jyotirlinga Homam will be performed on Somvar Masik Shivaratri which is observed every month on the Krishna Paksha Chatrudashi Tithi or the 14th day of the Moon’s dark fortnight. It’s very auspicious to invoke Lord Shiva and all his forms on this day.

Significance of Rameswaram Jyotirlinga

Under the advice of sages and great holy men, Lord Rama installed the jyotirlinga at this place to atone for the sin of Brahmahatya or killing a Brahman. Also, the temple is considered to be the holiest of shrines as Lord Rama atoned for his sins here and Goddess Sita made a linga made of sand which is worshipped to date.
