Sree Bakthavatsala Perumal Temple in Thirunindravur is located around 30 KM from Chennai on the way to Arakkonam. Moolavar is Blessing as Bhakthavatsala Perumal.

Here Moolavar is also worshipped as Battaravi Perumal means that he is the life of the Devotees ( The Bhaktas ). The Goddess is being worshipped as Ennai Petra Thayar means the mother who gave the birth to me.

Once there was a dispute between Saivism and Samanam (Jainism) to know who is superior. For this they made a challenge that both of them will light a Wick and float them on the Coovam river. The wick lightened by Saivaites got more brighten and stopped here in this place. Wick means "Thiri in Tamil hence the name Thiri Nindra Oor.

Nindra means stppoed. Oor means the place. Later it is being called as  "Thiru Nindra Oor. Another Legend is that, Once there was a dispute between the almighty and his Consort, she  left him from Thiruparkadal and came down to Thirunindravur. Thiru means Goddess Lakshmi. Since she came down and stayed here the place is being called as  Thirunindravur.

Since the almirghty Sreeman Narayanan came down here from Thiruparkadal in search of his consort stayed along with her for some time hence it is also being called as Sreenivasa Kshetram.

Sri Bakthavatsala Perumal temple is a Hindu temple, located at  Thirunindravur, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu.

Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar  saints from the 6th - 9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam  dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Bhaktavatsala Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Ennai Petra Thayar.

The temple is believed to have been built by the Pallavas of the late 8th century AD, with later contributions from Medieval Cholas and Vijayanagar kings. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all the shrines and two bodies of water.

There is a four-tiered rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower, in the temple.Bhatavatsala Perumal is believed to have appeared to Kubera. Six daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the Krishna Janmasthami festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Aavani  (August-September), being the most prominent.

Varuna, Samudraraja had worshipped Vishnu at this place. It is also said that Vishnu, reurning from this place followed by Lakshmi, stayed here and hence it is called Thirunindravur.

It is also that Thirumangai Alvar did not sing any paasuram (songs) here and follwed by Vishnu followed Thirukadalmallai and sang song praising the deity Bhaktavatsala Perumal from there. Lakshmi requested Perumal to appear before the azhwar, but when he did Azhwar had already reached Tirukannapuram.

  • Do not come to Temple for any purpose other than worshipping of God and Goddess.
  • Do not smoke at Temple.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  • Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Darshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others.
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  • Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  • Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
