The Deity in the temple is famous as “Chaya Someshwara Swamy” due to the Vertical Chaya present in daylight, on the Shiva Lingam forming a permanent shadow of a pillar. The temple was built 11th – 12th centuries. One of the three (Trikutalayam) sanctum sanctorum and the pillars in front of it was designed in a way to cast a unified pillar’s shadow constantly on the lingam.

The shadow is apparent even today when you visit the temple. Although there is no pillar in front of the lingam, a shadow appears in the form of one of the pillars that have been sculpted outside the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. It was till recently that it was a mystery that many failed to solve. The sculpture of the temple and intricately carved pillars add on to the beauty of this otherwise humble temple. The pillars are carved with stories from Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The rare combination of simplistic yet advanced architecture along with intricate carvings gives this temple a unique touch.
