The kamakshi Amman Temple is located in the historic city of Kanchipuram,near Chennai, India. The primary diety of this temple is Kamakshi(parvati). Kamakshi Temple is the famous temple dedicated to kamakshi,one of the Goddess Parvathi.

Kamakshi temple was created by Palava kings. chariot festival (Ther) and float festival, (Theppam) are held in this temple. Kamakshi offered worship to a Shivalingam made out of sand, under a mango tree and gained Shiva\'s hand in marriage.The Devi in this original Kamakshitemple is called by various names like Kirtimati, Devagarbha in extant Tantric works like Tantrachudamani. She has four hands containing in each of them respectively, Ankusa, Pasa, Abhaya and a Kapala.

According to references from scriptures, Goddess Kamakshi is basically a reappearance of Goddess Parvati. When, Goddess Kamakshi constructed a Shivalingam out of sand and reflected. After some span, Lord Shiva seemed and Parvati proposed marriage to him, to which Lord Shiva concurred. The Kamakshi Amman Temple is the main Goddess Parvati or Goddess Shakthi sanctuary in the city of Kanchipuram.

All the Devathas looked for the assistance of Lord Shiva for securing them from Bandasura evil spirit. God Shiva prompted the Devatas to go to Bala Tripurasundari Devi. The Devathas emulated Lord Shiva's recommendation and came to Kanchipuram camouflaged as parrots. They appealed to Bala Tripurasundari Devi for help. The Goddess paid attention to their get and blast out of a Bila. She killed Bandasura and brought him from Kailasam to Kanchipuram. According to the Goddess' wish Bandasura was buried there and the Gayatri Mandapam was constructed. The Goddess said that she would be bless all the enthusiasts with her vision, subsequently the name Kamakshi.
