Kapaleeswarar Temple Story, Mylapore

As indicated by the puranas it is said that the Parvathi the wife of Lord Shiva adored god Shiva taking the structure of the peacock and on account of this reason the location was named as the Mylai and also the sanctuary was assembled after that by the Pallava Nayanmars. Mayil remains for peacock in the Tamil idiom.

There is a fascinating story behind thekapaleeswarar temple. Once Brahma did not pay regards to Shiva and Parvathi when he saw them at Mount Kailash. Shiva got furious with the unreasonable conduct of Brahma and culled off one of Brahma's head to show him a lesson. Brahma got startled and apologized for his behaviour. Then after Lord Brahma came to Mylapore introduced a Shiva lingam and began doing tapas satisfying God Shiva.

As Shiva took away one of Brahma's head- kapalam and Brahma introduced a Shiva lingam to offer reparations for his transgression. The Siva lingam here came to be called Kapaleeswarar.
