Karpaka Vinayaka Temple (Pillaiyar Patti Temple) is an famous carved cave shrine dedicated to Lord Vinayaka located in Thiruppatthur, Tamil Nadu, India. In the cave temple, there are carved images of Lord Shiva and other Gods as well as several shrines. As per Agama texts found in the temple dates between the 1091 and 1238. A unique image of Lord Ganesha found in the temple helps to verify this dating. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Karpaka Vinayaka. The Lord Vinayakar sannidhi is a cave where the six feet of Lord Karpaka Vinayaka has been carved inside. As this is a cave formation, there is no provision to around for the Pradakshina (circumambulate). The temple was built under Patronisation of Pandyas. The age of the cave temple is two thousand five hundred years. There are fourteen sculptures in the cave ( dated from 500 BC to 1284 AD ). These sculptures state the ancient names of Pillaiyarpatti such as Ekkattoor, Thiruveenkaikkudi, Maruthangudi, and Rajanarayanapuram. This temple is the only one in Tamil Nadu which contains a six feet carved Lord Ganesha idol. The trunk of Lord Ganesha is curled towards his right side and so the God is also known as Lord Valampuri Vinayaka. Here Lord Vinayaka appears with two hands unlike in other places where he is seen with four hands. Lord Vinayaka is can be seen seated without Angusa Pasam, with his legs folded and stomach not touching the Asanam in the form of "Artha Padma" Asanam. The word Lord Vinayaka means "Incomparable Leader". Devotees worshipping Lord Valamburi Vinayaka facing  north, will be blessed with all forms of wealth. Chanting of sacred mantras by the students learning Vedas and Agamas text in the Vedaagama School create a divine atmosphere.
 
History
 
Karpaga Vinayakar temple history and growth can be traced in stages. The first stage takes us back by approximately thousand six hundred years. This was when the innermost carved shrines housing Lord Karpaka Vinayakar and Lord Thiruveesar took form. Lord Ganesha's distinctive image and the character in the temple inscriptions help ascertain the date. Karpaga Vinayakar temple's third phase of growth is quite recent. The temple and the tank have been renovated and refurbished & look beautiful now.
This lovely temple is in Pillayarpatti, which is consorts by Pudukkottai and Karaikkudi. Pillaiyarpatti town derives its name from Lord Pillayar. Karpaga Vinayakar temple's presiding deity is Lord Karpaka Vinayakar and Lord Vinayaka is depicted with two arms and a trunk bent towards his right in the Valampuri mode. The image of Lord Ganesha is masive, towering at six feet .It is believed that by worshipping Kathyayini amman at this temple,  women get relived from ‘sevvai dosham’, (a planetary position in horoscope),  which prevents them from getting married. "Saptha Madhar" are  provided with a separate sannidhi known as Goddess Sakthi sannadhi at this temple.
 
Temple Festival
 
Auspicious Festival Ganeshan Chathurthi is celebrated for 10 days in a grand manner every year during the months of (Aug- Sep). During that time, great numbers  of pilgrims gather and participate in the car festival.
 
In most of the temples of the Lord Vinayaka, in which car festivals are celebrated , and this is one among the temples. Two cars (Raths) are used for both Lord Chandikeswara and Lord Vinayaka. The car of the Lord Chandikeswara is pulled by women and  children only.  On the Ninth day of the festivals while the car is going on the streets, devotees to do Anga pradakshinam (rolling over whole body)
 
Temple Puja 
 
During the (Uchikala) midday Puja, on the annual Vinayaka Chaturthi day in the month of August-September, a giant size modhak (Kozhukkattai) which is prepared with a quantity of eighteen measure of rice, two measures of Dhil (Ellu ), six measures of Dhal, fifty coconuts, one measure of cow ghee, hundred gms cardamom, 40 kg jaggery is offered to Lord as Nivedhana. The whole mixture is packed in a cloth & placed in the rice basket  in the temple kitchen. This will be covered inside a bowl placed in a cooking continously for two days in a medium flame and the day of pujas this will be carried to the Lord Vinayaka shrine and offer(Nivedhana) the prayers .After the puja once the Nivedhana is relieved from the heat shall be cut in to pieces and offered to devotees.

  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  • Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Darshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others.
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  • Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  • Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
