Saint Tirugnana Sambandar has praised the temple in his Thevaram hymns. This is the 84th Lord Shiva temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in hymns.

The sanctum sanctorum of the temple with its 7 tier Rajagopuram is facing east. There are two prakaras. In the first inner there are shrines for Lords Muruga, Nataraja, Somaskanda, Dakshinamurthy, Viswanaha, Kailasanathar, Brgatheeswarar, Annamalayar, Jambukeswara, Mother Badrakali and Sage Agasthya. The shrines for Lord Muruga and Kubera the Lord of Wealth are big in size separately. Sri Vinayaka of the temple is worshipped as Lord Badri Vinayaka.

As there were many places called Velur, as this place is on the east, it is named Keezh Velur. This is one of the Mada Temples built by Kotchengannan. The Anju Vattathu Amman Koil here is very famous among devotees. The Shiva Linga worshipped by Sage Agasthya is also in the temple. Lord Nataraja granted darshan to Sage Agasthya in a dancing form pressing His right leg with ten hands. This is a rare form of the Lord. Lords Vishnu and Brahmma, Indira, Agni, Yama, Chandra the Moon, Vayu, Sages Vasishta and Markandeya, Dhunmathi, Chandra Gupta had worshipped Lord in this temple.

Lord Muruga sought the blessings of Lord Shiva to cleanse Himself of the sin He incurred for killing demon Surapanma in Tiruchendur. Lord Shiva advised the Son to create a spring in Keezh Velur and worship Him to accomplish the purpose. Lord Muruga reached this place with His Nava-Nine commanders. To begin the worship, first, Lord Muruga made a Vinayaka with turmeric (Manjal in Tamil) powder. That place near Velur is now called Manjadi.  With the help of Maya the divine sculptor, He built a beautiful Shiva Temple with a Vimana called Pushkala Vimana. Creating a spring with His Vel weapon on the east entrance, He bathed in the water along with His commanders and all army men. Completing all the preliminaries, Lord Muruga began an intense penance on Lord Shiva. Evil spirits began to spoil the Lords penance. He sought the help of Mother Parvathi, who in the name of Anju Vattathu Amman ? Mother covering five circles ? four directions and the sky ? appeared there and protected Lord Muruga and His penance.
