Suchindram Shaktipith is one of the 51 major Shakti Peethas is located at southern most district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, India. The holy place Suchindram Shakti peetha is dedicated to adivine power  "Goddess Durga" and worshipped as "Maa Narayani". It is believed that Devi Sati's "upper teeth" fell here. 

Suchindrum is a temple town situated in the southern most district of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu State, India. It is 11 km from Kanyakumari city and about 7 km from Nagarkoil lying between these two towns.

The temple is dedicated to Sri Sthanumalayan. The word denotes Siva, Vishnu and Brahma as. Sthanu represents Siva, Mal represents Vishnu while Ayan represents Brahma, means Siva, Vishnu and Brahma in "One Form".

Suchindrum means the place where Indra attained "Suchi" (Purification). The Sthalapurana has it that Indra suffered a curse from sage Gowthama, when he stealthily cast amorous glances at Ahalya the wife of Gowthama. Not able to suffer the mortification brought about by the curse.

Indra had to seek immediate redemption. He came to Gnana Aranya as this place was then called and offered worship to Lord Shiva. Relieving Indra of his curse, Lord Shiva granted him of his wish that the place where he attained purification should henceforth be called Suchindrum.


Maa Narayani Suchindram Shakti Peetha is located at  Kanyakumari in  Tamilnadu. This Temple is dedicated to Goddess durga and is one among 51 Shakthi Peethas.

When Sati, the wife of Shiva, sacrificed herself at the Yajna performed by her father Daksha, a very distraught Shiva started dancing with her body. He was dancing the dance of destruction. And the gods said, "Oh, we are doomed! Shiva is dancing the dance of destruction

Vishnu took his bow and cut the body of Sati into fifty-one pieces with his arrows. And wherever a piece of the Divine Mothers body fell on earth, that place became a Shakti Peetha.

According to Mythology Sati devi upper teeth is fell here . The main idols of this legendary divine place are Devi as "Maa Narayani" (wife of Narayan) and Lord Shiva as "Sangharor Samhara" (the destroyer), worshipped here. The holy place is dedicated to Sri Sthanumalayan (one form of trinity- Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh).

In this Temple Goddess Durga looks extremely beautiful after early morning Puja. Samhara Bhairava is present in a nearby village, Suchindram, he is locally called Sthanu Shiva.

  • Do not smoke at Temple.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  • Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Darshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others.
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  • Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  • Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
