Manikundram temple is one famous Hindu temple located in banks of river Vennaru, Tanjavur. The main deity is Lord Vishnu with his consort Goddess Lakshmi in the form of Lord Manikunra Perumal and Ambujavalli. This temple is one among the group of three temples collectively called "Parasara Kshethiram" as well as "Thanjaimamani temple" which is comes under 108 Divya desam dedicated for the great deity Lord Vishnu. Tamil Vainava poets the Alwars glorifies the beauty of this shrine in his poem Mangalasasanam.

The main deity Lord Manikundra Perumal giving a divine look to the devotees in sitting posture with Goddess Shridevi and Goddess Bhoodevi. Goddess Ambujavali who is in the form of Goddess Lakshmi located in eastern side of shrine blesses the devotees to get prosperity and wealth in future life.

This temple is a remarkable for a legacy of Lord Vishnu who killed the demons Tanjaka, Thandaka, Tharakasura to save sage Parasura. Once Sage Parasura got attrocities from demons, he wished prayers to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appeared in the form of Kali and killed the Tharakasura. After that Tanjaka took an elephant form and made a revenge to sage. So Lord Vishnu took Narasimha avatar and killed the Tanjaka. After this incident this place attain a name of Tanjavur city. Demon Thandaka aware of the deaths of his colleagues he hide into earth by spliting it. At this moment Lord Vishnu incarnated as Varaha and Killed the Tandaka by digging into earth. Then Lord Vishnu Sat in this shrine and blesses devotees in the form of Manikundra Perumal.

Panguni Uthiram falls between March and April, Aadi Unjal Utsavam falls between July and August, Thai Fridays between January and February, Narasimhar Jayanthi, Brahmotsavam are the special festivals celebrations in this shrine.

This temple kept openings from 08.00 PM to 12.00 PM and 05.00 PM to 08.00 PM.
