History Of Murudeshwara Temple

‘Murudeshwar’ means Lord Shiva. At the time of Ramayana, the Lanka King Ravana performed severe penance to Lord Shiva with complete devotion in order to attain immortality by obtaining Atma Linga (the divine lingam of Lord Shiva). Lord Shiva pleased by his penance and appeared in front of him and asked him what boon he wanted from Him. At that time, Lord Vishnu changed Ravana’s mind for the request of Sage Narada. Ravana asks for Mother Parvati. Lord Shiva offers him a requested boon.

Ravana started return to Lanka with Goddess Parvati. Sage Narada tricks Ravana that the real Parvati was in Pathala. So, Ravana left Mother Parvati and went to Pathala and marries a king’s daughter. When he returns back to his Kingdom, Ravana’s mother asked him for Atma Linga. He realized that he was tricked by Lord Vishnu and Sage Naratha. He became very angry and again he started to please Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva appears before him. Ravana asks for forgiveness and Atma Linga as his boon. Lord Shiva agreed to give Atma Linga with a condition that it should never be placed on the ground. If Atma Linga was placed on the ground, all the powers would return to Lord again. Having Atma Linga, Ravana started back to Lanka. Narada Muni realized Ravana may obtain deathless life & create problem on earth and he approached to Lord Ganesha for help.

Lord Vishnu blocked the sun to make it appear as dark. Ravana had to perform evening rituals. He would not be able to do because having Atma Linga in his hands. A small brahmin boy (Lord Ganesha) came near him. Ravana requested him to hold the Linga until he finished his puja. A small boy made a deal with him that he would call Ravana thrice & if he doesn’t return within that time, he would place the Atma Linga on the ground.

Before Ravana completing his rituals, Ganesha placed the Atma Linga on the ground. Lord Vishnu removed the blockage of sunlight and it was day again. Ravana got more furious. He tried to destroy Atma Linga but could not. He threw the case covering of Atma Linga to a place called Sajjeshwara, threw the lid of the Atma Linga to a place called Gunavanthe and finally, he threw the cloth that covered the Atma Linga to a place called Mrideshwar. The name has been renamed to Murudeshwara.
