One version linked with this temple. Once a couple had to move over to other place for some reason, leave their young daughter near Ayyanar temple there. A villager saw the baby girl and started to bring it up. After few years, she was died of small pox. They buried the girl in the backyard & build a sepulchre covered with roof over it. The parents lit the lamp daily and the villagers also lit the lamp and prayed to her. They got the positive results. They called her as Seethala Devi. They build a small temple for her and now devotees came here from far and wide.
Sri Valangaiman Mariamman Temple also called Paadaikattiya Amman Temple- strange ritual of mock funeral, Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu. It is 1000-2000 years old temple.

"Paadai Kavadi" or "Paadai kattuthal" is an unusual and strange ritual here. "Paadai" made of two horizondal poles with a flowers and coconut leaves bed which is generally used for carrying a dead body. Devotees with serious illness pray to Amman that they would offer the Paadai Kavadi after getting complete recovery from illness. And also, those who escaped from the death due to illness or accident will normally performed this ritual to convey their thanks to the Amman for saving their life.

Those who committed to do Paadai kattuthal ritual, will be lie on the paadai and will be taken around the temple  with somebody carrying fire pot. Once the mock funeral procession is over, the paadai will be kept before the temple. After performing puja to the deity, the temple priest splash the holy water on the devotee. They will get up from the paadai by the grace of Goddess. Most of the people performed Paadaikattuthal ritual will get the positive results, peace & satisfication.

The temple door is open from 6.00AM to 12.00AM and from 5.00PM to 8.00PM.
