Rudhra Kodeeswarar is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thirukazhukundram, Tamilnadu. The temple has a traditional South Indian style, with features of a four-tier architecture, with delightful entrance called 'Rajagopuram'. Presiding deity is called as Lord Rudra Kodeeswarar and Goddess is called as Pennin Nallal ( Thirupurasundari). The temple is considered as Thevara Vaippu Sthalam his Devaran hyms. Thirunavukarasu Nayanar has referred about this temple in his devaram. The temple is situated at the foot of the hill near Sangu Theertham. Rudhra Kodesswarar temple is also known as Easwaran Temple or Rudran Temple. The Rudrakoteeswarar Temple, the name of the Goddess is Rudrani is also known as Abhirami Nayaki.
History
According to legancy, the celestial beings who could not bear the torture of the Kodi Asuras who emitted from Kashyapa rishi, pray Lord Siva, pleasing the devotion and prayer of kashyapa rishi loosed is Kodi Rudras from his chest who killed the kodi asuras. The Rudras, after finishing the task assigned to them, worshipped the Lord to atone the sin of killing kodi asuras. Later kodi Rudras were pardoned and got merged in his Lord Shiva heart.
Story behind the buried Nandhi:
Once Lord Vishnu came to see Lord Shiva in the form of Garudan, When Garudazhwar was waiting outside, before the Lord Vishnu came out, Lord Nandikeswarar blew his breath over Lord Garudazhwar and the feathers of Lord Garudazhwar fell off. After that, the Lord Shiva then punished Nandikeswarar by making him sink to the ground. When Nandhi’s body started to sink into the ground, at the behest of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva stopped Lord Nandikeswarar at that point.
