Sankat Mochan Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. The temple is situated on the Assi river. Sankat Mochan temple is also called as Monkey temple because of the presence of lot of monkeys inside the premises. It is one of the holy temples of Lord Hanuman and the main location for Hindus for their many religious as well as cultural festivals. The meaning of the Sankat Mochan give relief from all the problems. (Sankat means problem & Mochan means relief Giver). The Temple was constructed by the educationist and freedom fighter Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya in the early 1900s.
 
History
 
The temple was established by the great saint Goswami Tulsidas (the author of the Ramacharitamanas). The Ramcharitamanas is the hindi edition of the Hindu epic Ramayana which was initially written by the Valmiki. Sankat Mochan Foundation was started by the Veer Bhadra Mishra (the high priest of the temple) in 1982. Veer Bhadra Mishra was working of cleaning and protecting the holy River Gange. This project was financed by the U. S. and the Swedish governments. Veer Bhadra Mishra was the previous chief of the Department of Civil Engineering in the IIT, BHU, Varanasi.
The temple of the Sankat Mochan has unique feature by having the idol of Lord Hanuman in front of his Lord Rama. Lord Hanuman is very powerful Avtar of the Lord Shiva and known as the Rudra Avat. Lord Hanuman is the great Karma Yogi and an extraordinary Brahmachari. He is the sign of desirelessness and unselfish devotees towards the Lord Rama. Festival

Auspicious Festival Hanuman Jayanthi is Celebrated in this temple. The Sankat Mochan Sangeet Samaroh (classical music and dance concert event) takes place every year in the month of April. In this event, great musicians and performers from all across the India participant. This event attracts huge crowd lakhs of devotees from all across the world have common belief that if they offer Puja at this Sankat Mochan temple (Sankat Mochan Temple), they will get their desire fulfilled as well as relief from all kind of Sankat (problems). The devotees of the Lord Hanuman offer Prasad (desi ghee) and Sindoor on the statue to the Lord Hanuman which is offer to devotees in the campus of the temple. They also decorate the idol of the Lord Hanuman with the garland made from flower and offering vada malai, butter and thulasi Malai.
