Sarangapani Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Vishnu, located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham by the 12 poet saints, orAlwars.This temple is along Kaveri and is one of the Pancharanga Kshetrams.
The temple is believed to be of significant antiquity with contributions at different times from Medieval Cholas,Vijayanagar Empire and Madurai Nayaks. The temple is enshrined within a huge granite wall and the complex contains all the shrines and the water bodies of the temple.
The rajagopuram (the main gateway) has eleven tiers and has a height of 173 ft (53 m). The Potramarai tank, the temple tank, is located opposite to the western entrance of the temple.Sarangapani is believed to have appeared for sage Hemarishi.
The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. The temple chariot festival is the most prominent festival of the temple, celebrated during the Tamil month of Chittirai.
When it was time for the destroyal of this world a huge pralaya came up. In order to save the vedha's Amirtham and tools necessary to create lives on earth, lord Bhrama collected all these things and put them in a mud pot and kept the pot safety on the top of the Mountain Meru.
Pralaya kalam (ie) the period of non stop heavy rain came and the pot of bhrama was washed away by the flood. In due course moving in the south direction it came to halt at a particular place. Then for the wish of all devar's (ie) heavenly people Lord Shiva broke the pot with an arrow.
Immediately Amudham (ie) the liquit given eternity flowed from the pot and formed two tanks. One is known as Maha maga kulam and the othr Potramarai kulam. The remains of the pot and Amudham joined together to form "Lord Kumbeswarar". In the name of the broken pot (ie) Kumbam that place was clled Kumbakkonam or simply Kudanthai.
Thirukkudanthai Divyadesam familiarly worshipped as Sarangapani Temple is One among the Pancha Ranga Kshetrams, which is also being worshipped as Kalyanapuram and Sarangapattinam is located in heart of the Holy Town Kumbakonam.
It is the biggest Sree Vaishnava Temple of the city. Temples Sanctum Sanctorum has two entrances, the first one is for the period of Uthrayanamand the other for the remaining period of Dhakshinayanam. Sarangapani Temple is one of the Pancha Ranga Kshetrams.
The special feature is that the temple itself is in the Shape of a Chariot. Here the almighty holds a bow called Sarngam hence He is being worshipped as Sarngapani. Thayar is Komalavalli Thayar. Since She never went out of the temple for any reason she is been worshipped as Padi Thaandaa Pathini. This is the 3rd Divyadesam hymned by 7 Azhwars with their 51 Pasurams.
