Apathsahayar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Thirupazhanam near Tiruvaiyaru, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple is incarnated by the hymns of Appar and is classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam.

The place is named Tirupazhanam for its green environment and fertile fields. Once, a young Brahmin boy, chased by the God of Death, Yama ran in panic and surrendered at the feet of Lord Shiva in the temple.

The Lord appeared before him
and saved him from the clutches of death. As the Lord saved the boy from the danger of death, He is praised as Abath Sahayeswarar  (Abathu-danger, Sahayam-help).

Festivals:

Ezhur Sapthasthana festival, Shivarathri
in February-March, Margazhi Tiruvadhirai in December-January and Aipasi Annabhishekam in October-November are the festivals celebrated in the temple.

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 11.00 a.m. and 4.30 p.m. and 8.30 p.m



This is the 50th temple on the northern bank of Cauvery.

Lord Shiva graces in the temple as a swayambumurthy. Rays of moon fall on the Lord on Poornima days (full moon) and also before after two days in the month of Panguni (March-April) and Purattasi (September-October).

The main tower is too ancient in three tier model. There is no flag post in the temple. It has a Balipeeta and Nandhi. There are shrines for Lord Vinayaka and Muruga. The vahanas (the vehicle idols of Gods) are stored in the right of the front hall.

After worshipping Vinayaka and proceeding further on the left, there are shrines of Sapthamadhas (seven virgins), Vinayaka, Venugopala and Shivalingas in different names, Nataraja Sabha, Bhairava and Navagrahas the nine planets.

The place is known as Kathalivanam meaning place of plantain trees. Moon worshipped here. Kubera the authority for wealth, Lord Vishnu, Mahalakshmi and a Brahmin named Darmasharma worshipped here.

This is the second of the Sapthasthana sthalams  holy places.

  • Do maintain silence and recite your Istamantram to yourself inside the temple.
  • Do observe ancient custom and traditions while in Temple.
  • Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only

  • Do not come to Temple for any Purpose other than worshiping of God and Goddess
  • Do not smoke at Temple.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple
  • Do not Eat Non Vegetarian food in the Kshetram
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Dharshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets ,caps ,turbans and hats inside the temple premises
