Sri Ayavantheeswarar temple is situated in the nagapatinam and one of the ancient temples.And it is 144th temple among 275 shiva sthalam
Brahma worshiped Lord Siva here, hence the name Ayavanthy. This is birth place of Thiru Neelanakka Nayanar Every day Thiru Neelanakka Nayanar and his wife used to visit this
temple. One day he went to take bath in the nearby theertham and asked
his wife to prepare the sanctum for pooja .
When she was cleaning the
premises she noticed a spider fell on Siva Lingam. She tried to remove
the spider on the Lingam by blowing air with her mouth because her hand
was full of dirt.
Meanwhile Nayanar arrived and got annoyed her act and
taught she was doing some stupid activity. He left her and stayed back
in the temple that night. In his dream that night, Lord Siva showed him
that all other place, except the place spider fell was wounded. Nayanar
realised his mistake and rejoined with his wife.

The temple is open from 8.30 a.mto 12 noon and 5 p.m to 8 p.m
Temple Festivals:
Six worship services are offered each day here. A festival
commemorating Haradatta Sivacharyar is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai each year.
Mahasivaratri, Arudra Darisanam, Navaratri and Aadi Pooram are celebrated here.
Here the lord Ayavantheeswarar is a suyamburthy.The ambal in the temple have a significance head which looks like a third eye as lord shiva looks.Another significance here the lord siva is in the position of hand in the head.
South Facing temple with five Tiered Rajagopuram, Ayavantheeswarar
facing south and his consort Eru malar kannamai in a separate shrine
within the same premises. Very big temple with a very high wall, in
first prahar Chandran, Sanibhagavan (placing his foot over Crow),
Sapthamatharkal, Bhairavar, Navagraham, Mahalingam, Viswanathar with
Visalakshi and Vinayagar shrines are there.
Inside the premises Subramaniyar, Mahalakshmi, Nalvar, Thiru
Neelanakka Nayanar with his consort Mangaiyarkarasi, Somaskandhar,
Mahaganapathi and a separate idol of Navaneetha Krishnan are seen in
this temple.
