Sri Panankatteesar Temple is located at Thiru Panagkattore, which is around 10 km from Vizhupuram. It is located at a distance of about 160 kilometers from Chennai, which is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is located close to Puducherry, which is the state border The nearest railway station is the Vikravandi railway station.

Panakatteshwarar is a form of Shiv-lingam that faces the east. There are two prakarams in the temple. The other deities that are worshipped in the temple are Vinayakar & Arumagar.

There are many other deities that can be found in the temple as well namely those of Thirumal, Durga, Brahma, Navagrah, Nataraj etc. The Shiv Parvathi pair are seen holding hands.

This temple is 1300 years old and it was visited by the Tamil Saivite sage Tirungana Sambandar, during the 7th century, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to sing hymns and verses praising the Shiv linga idol.

Sri Panankatteesar Temple is located  at Puravar Panankattur (now known as Panayapuram in Villupuram district). This Panankatteesar Temple is dedicated to Lord Siva . In this temple Lord Shiva is worshipped as Panankatteesar.

It is one of the Paadal Petra Sthalams and is one of the Naadu Nadu Shiva Sthalams.The temple is a over 1000 years old. This is said to be the place where the Sun God worshipped Lord Siva.

The temple is a padal petra sthlam and thirugnanasambandar has sung about the temple in many places. The Panayapuram temple is one of the five temples that have the Panai (palm tree) as sthala Vriksham.

The lord here is Panankaatesswarar referring to the palymra forests that once existed here. the ambal here is also known as Paravai / Sathyambigai / Puravammai.

Legend has it that Lord Surya worshipped Shiva here to regain his brightness and a rare feature here is in the months of april ?may tamil month Chithirai the suns rays fall directly on the lord as well as the ambal bathing them from top to botom as he transits from morning to evening So  all sannidhis of the temple face east.

The Surya Dev (that is, the Sun God) lost his luster and shine. He had to pray to Lord Shiva to regain his original brilliance. This is the place where Surya Dev worshipped Lord Shiva to get his gleam back. Lord Shiva, who was happy with Surya's worship granted him his brilliance back.

  • Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  • Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
