Virudhagireeswarar Temple is known as Pazhamalainathar Temple. It is situated of the northen bank of the riverManimuthar. It is at a distance of 3 kilometers from Virudhachalam Railway junction and 1 kilometer from Virudhachalam Town Railway Station and 1 kilometer from Virudhachalam Bus Stand.

This temple has been constructed according to Agama Shastram and it has five Gopurams, five Praharams, five Nandhhi, five Kodimarm and five holy Cars.

It is a big temple with vast courtyards surrounded by tall walls and towers on the four sides. The outermost prakaram is referred to as Kailasa Prakaram. A sage by name Vipachit is believed to have built the earliest structure of this temple, and his image is kept under the
vanni tree here.

Sri Pazhamalainathar Temple  is situated in Tirumudukunram, villupuram , TamilNadu. This Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva . This Holy shrine is one among 275 Shiva Sthalams and is one of the Naadu Nadu Shiva Temple.

The legend is that Agasthyar, Surya, Chandra, Brahma and Vishnu have worshipped Siva here. Siva is also said to have blessed the Devas with a vision of the Cosmic Dance and it is believed that this Stalam stayed untouched through the great deluge.

It is recorded that Sundarar is believed to have dropped his gold ring in the Manimuttar River here, and retrieved it in the Kamalalayam tank at Tiruvarur.

It is one of the place giving salvation to the departed. It is even considered holier than Holy Kasi i.e. Varanasi. People in the past believed that Pazamalainathar himself the presiding diety here used to ulter Panchatchara Mandiram into the ears of dead.

Hence in olden days people of Virudhachalam never bothered to undertake a pilgrimage to Varanasi when they become old and weak. As a result this place is also come to known as Virudhakasi.
 
Sri Thiruganasambhandar, Sri Thirunavukarasar, saint Sundrar had sung the golory of Pazhamalainathar.It is to be noted that goddess is worshipped in the form of elderly lady called Periyayahi alias Virudhambihai.

At this request of guru Namasivayar she also took the form of young women with the name Balambihai. Vannimaram is the Holy tree.

  • Do respect religious sentiments at Temple.
  • Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only.

  • Do not come to Temple for any purpose other than worshipping of God and Goddess.
  • Do not smoke at Temple.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple.
  • Do not eat non-vegetarian food in the Kshetram.
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Darshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others.
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple.
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets, caps, turbans and hats inside the temple premises.
  • Do not perform Sastanga Pranama inside the Sanctum Sanctorum.
  • Do not take much time while performing Sparsa Darshanam to God in Garbhagriha.
  • Do not buy spurious prasadams from street vendors.
  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
