King Ratnendra Chola and his brother
wanted to partition the diamonds left by their parents.  They did not agree with the value determined by various assessers.  Only confusion continued.  Both sought the help of Lord of the temple to decide the issue. 

Lord came in the guise of diamond merchant and solved their problem and also in sharing the kingdom.  As Lord came as diamond (Rathna in Sanskrit and Gem in English) merchant, He is praised as Rathnapureeswarar.

Festivals:

Kotpuli Nayanar Guru Puja on Jeshta (Kettai in Tamil) star day in Aadi (July-August) is the main festival of the temple. Also, all Shiva related festivals are observed.

Opening time:

The temple is open from 7.00 a.m. to 12.00 a.m. and from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.


This is the 118th temple on the southern bank of Cauvery praised in Thevaram hymns.

Nagarathar devotees had liberally contributed to this temple facing east.  At the  eastern entrance of the tower is the shrine for Lord Vinayaka facing west who showed way by hand to Saint Sundarar. 

The Rajagopuram is of a five tier structure.
  There are shrines for LordsVinayaka, Muruga, Viswanatha, Mother Gajalakshmi and the Navagrahas the nine planets in the inner prakara.  Lords Dakshinamurthy, Lingodhbava, Brahmma  are on the Goshta the wall around the sanctum sanctorum.  It also has Kotpuli Nayanar.  Nataraja Sabha and procession deities are in the Mahamandap.

People come to pray to Lord seeking solutions forproblems in family, assets that could not be partitioned and for high yield in agriculture.  It is the staunch belief of the devotees that Lord will guide in such complex issues.

  • Do Do reserve your travel and accommodation at temple well in advance.
  • Do bath and wear clean clothes before you enter the temple
  • Do concentrate on God and Goddess inside the temple.
  • Do maintain silence and recite your Istamantram to yourself inside the temple.
  • Do observe ancient custom and traditions while in Temple.
  • Do deposit your offerings in the hundi only

  • Do not come to Temple for any Purpose other than worshiping of God and Goddess
  • Do not smoke at Temple.
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks at Temple
  • Do not Eat Non Vegetarian food in the Kshetram
  • Do not approach mediators for quick Dharshanam. It may cause inconvenient to others
  • Do not carry any weapon inside the temple
  • Do not wear any head guards like helmets ,caps ,turbans and hats inside the temple premises
