Sri Veeratteswarar Temple is  a swayambumurthy. The famous Vinayakar Agaval by divine poetess Avvaiyar dedicated to Vinayaka was sung in this temple. This is the place where Lord Shiva destroyed demon Andhakasura.

Of the eight Veeratta sthalas, this is the second with historical importance and antiquity. Lord Shiva in the sanctum sanctorum is with Bhairava power. Those afflicted with black magic and spells will be relieved of the evils if they worship in the temple.

The Vasthu Sastra widely followed in building plans now-a-days began from this place only. Planet Shukra was relieved of his curse. Saptha Madhas, Mother Maha Tripura Sundari, 64 Bhairavas and 64 Bhairavis came into being from this sacred land.

Sri Veeratteswarar Temple is located in Tirukkovilur , Villupuram. This hindu temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one among 275 Shiva Sthalams.

Tirukovilur has the reputation where the wedding of the daughters of noted Tamil philanthropist and king Pari Vallal, Angavai and Sangavai were celebrated with efforts of great poetess Avvaiyar and poet Kabilar.  The bridegroom was Deiveekan the king of the place.

The names linked to this wedding are the names of the villages surrounding Tirukovilur.  This is the place where noble and reputed Tamil poet Kabilar lived and placed his life to rest undertaking a fast.  The rock on which he was sitting facing north is even now known as Kabilar Hill.

Tirukkovalur is associated with the legend of Siva vanquishing the demon Dandakasuran. The image of Ganapathi here is said to have been worshipped by Avvaiar the Tamil Saint Poet.

  • Do not encourage beggars at Temple.
  • Do not spit or create nuisance in the premises of the temple.
