Jagatpita Brahma Temple

Jagatpita Brahma Temple Puja: Bestow with good things in life, clear hurdles, delays and frustration

Jagatpita Brahma Mandir is located in sacred Pushkar lake in Pushkar, Rajasthan.

It is one of the oldest temples in the world. The present structure of the temple dates back to 14th century. However, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old.

The sanctum sanctorum holds the central statue of four headed Brahma sitting on the majestic lotus with his young wife Gayatri in the left and Savitri on the right.

According to the legends, when Brahma slew the demon Vajranabha with his lotus flower weapon, the petals fell on the ground at three places, creating three lakes.

In Hindi, a flower is “pushpa” and hand is kar. Hence, when Brahma came down to the earth he named the place where the flower fell from his hand as Pushkar, and the three lakes as Pushkar Lake or Jyeshtha (greatest or eldest) Pushkar, Madhya (middle) Pushkar Lake and Kanishtha (lowest or youngest) Pushkar Lake.

There are many theories and myths as to why there are very few temples dedicated to the creator of the World.

It is commonly believed that he was cursed by his own wife Savitri. The myth says that Brahma decided to perform a fire-sacrifice at the main Pushkar lake. His wife Savitri was supposed to perform an essential part of the fire-sacrifice but she could not be present at the designated time.

Therefore, Brahma had to marry a local milkmaid Gayatri so that she can sit beside him to perform the final offering to the sacrificial fire.

Savitri was furious to found Gayatri sitting in her rightful place. Agitated, she cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped anywhere else than in Pushkar. Thus, the Pushkar temple is regarded the only temple dedicated to Brahma.

Although now the Pushkar temple is not the only Brahma temple in the world, it is still the most prominent one dedicated to the Lord.

The temple sanctum sanctorum holds the central images of Brahma and his second consort Gayatri. Although the present temple structure dates to the 14th century, the temple is believed to be 2000 years old.
